Vincent van Gogh (1853 – 1890)

Dutch post-impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh is one of the most expensive and influential figures in the history of art. Nevertheless, he had an absolutely tragic life. He didn’t become a priest like he wanted, he was poor and officially mad – van Gogh spent time in psychiatric hospitals, cut his left ear after a confrontation with his friend Paul Gaugin, and committed suicide at 37 years. But all the way long he was an undeniable genius. He created about 2000 artworks – landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and self-portraits with his signature bold colors and impulsive brushwork.

Paris, 1887

This is one of a group of four related still lifes of sunflowers that van Gogh painted in Paris during late summer 1887. For a long time this painting was owned by Paul Gaugin and held above his bed in his Paris apartment until the mid-1890s, when he sold it to finance his South Seas voyage.
