Piet Mondrian (1872-1944)

Piet Mondrian is a Dutch painter known for being one of the pioneers of 20th-century abstract art. Mondrian kept changing his artistic direction from figurative painting to an increasingly abstract style, until he reached a point where his artistic vocabulary was reduced to simple geometric elements.

Trafalgar Square
In September 1938, Mondrian moved from Paris to London to escape the threat of a German invasion. There he made Trafalgar Square, the first work in a series of paintings titled after locations in cities that gave him refuge during World War II.
