Ohara Koson

(1877-1945)

Ohara Koson was a Japanese painter and print designer and part of the shin-hanga (‘new prints’) movement. During his school years he moved from a little village to Tokyo. There he started to produce some ukiyo-e triptychs illustrating episodes of the Russo-Japanese War, but most of his works were prints of birds and flowers.

Irises

This print consisting of tiny flowers on a small woodblock is an important symbol of Japan. Irises, from dark purplish variants to their more pale, pastel violet hues, are used to represent loyalty, having a noble heart, and bringing good news.
