Piet Mondrian (1872-1944)

Piet Mondrian is a Dutch painter known for being one of the pioneers of 20th-century abstract art. Mondrian kept changing his artistic direction from figurative painting to an increasingly abstract style, until he reached a point where his artistic vocabulary was reduced to simple geometric elements.

Place de la Concorde

Mondrian fled from Paris in 1938 and settled in New York City a few years later, bringing this painting with him. The horizontal and vertical black stripes and blocks of yellow, blue, and red against the white background created an active pattern of irregular sequences. Although this painting was named after a bustling square in Paris, it removed any notion of realistic reproduction.
