AKAN FROG CAP

$65.00 USD

This is inspired by the ceremonial caps of the Akan ethnic group of Ghana with the shape and style attributed to the Baule ethnic group of Côte d’Ivoire. This piece also includes ornaments inspired by Benin Kingdom in Nigeria. Usually, the caps are worn by traditional chiefs or important dignitaries during Baule ceremonies. The various ornaments, in bronze, have a light golden patina and are forged using the ancient ‘lost wax’ process of bronze casting. Commonly associated with royalty, the depiction of the frog on top of the cap alludes to the proverb “A frog’s length is only apparent after death” meaning a chief’s contributions and leadership is more significant after the reign.
