AKAN SHELL CAP

$55.00 USD

This is inspired by the ceremonial caps of the Akan ethnic group of Ghana with the shape and style attributed to the Baule ethnic group of Côte d’Ivoire. This piece also includes ornaments inspired by Benin Kingdom in Nigeria. Usually, the caps are worn by traditional chiefs or important dignitaries during Baule ceremonies. The various ornaments, in bronze, have a light golden patina and are forged using the ancient ‘lost wax’ process of bronze casting.

The golden shell on top the cap is a symbol revered by the Akan ethnic group and used in chiefly regalia designs throughout the 16th to 19th century.
